What Is SUS430 Stainless Steel?

Stainless steels are commonly classified into 200-series, 300-series, and 400-series based on their microstructure and alloy composition.

  • 200- and 300-series: Austenitic stainless steels (contain chromium and nickel)
  • 400-series: Ferritic or martensitic stainless steels

SUS430 is a ferritic stainless steel containing approximately 18% chromium, with little to no nickel content. It is one of the most widely used grades in the 400-series.

Advantages of SUS430 Stainless Steel

  • Low Thermal Expansion

SUS430 exhibits relatively low thermal expansion, which helps maintain dimensional stability in applications exposed to temperature variations.

  • Cost Efficiency

Because SUS430 does not contain nickel, it is generally more cost-effective than grades such as SUS304 or SUS316. This makes it attractive for high-volume or cost-sensitive components.

  • Good Machinability

Compared to nickel-containing stainless steels, SUS430 offers better machinability and cutting performance, reducing tool wear and machining complexity.

It also maintains reasonable machinability in lower-temperature environments.

 

Limitations of SUS430

  • Lower Corrosion Resistance than SUS304

While SUS430 is corrosion-resistant, it does not match the performance of nickel-containing grades like SUS304 or SUS316—especially in humid, marine, or chemically aggressive environments.

Post-machining cleaning is strongly recommended, as residual oils or contaminants can accelerate surface corrosion.

  • Limited Mechanical Strength

SUS430 cannot be hardened through heat treatment and offers lower mechanical strength compared to martensitic or austenitic stainless steels.

It is not recommended for high-load, high-wear, or impact-critical components.
